How does the saying go? “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” It’s so true. I love a good yard sale find that can be transformed or repurposed! Going to yard sales are one of my favorite things to do on a leisurely Saturday morning, coffee in hand. I love yardsaling in my community, a lot of times entire neighborhoods will organize a yard sale day for one stop shopping.
When a friend and I were shopping for a teen bedroom transformation project, I came across these completely demolished wooden outdoor chairs. They were extremely wobbly, and in such rough shape. I was really excited because I had been looking at purchasing some rocking chairs for my small front porch, but I hadn’t pulled the trigger yet because I wasn’t sure the porch had enough space. If I could DIY these chairs back to life, they would be perfect.
The man who was selling them came over when he saw me looking at them, I think he was happy someone was giving them attention and hoped I would scoop them up. He said, “A buck a piece and they’re yours!” What a steal, that was a number I couldn’t resist! Even if they were beyond repair and I couldn’t use them, I only lost $2, I could live with that!
I must have really wanted those chairs because my friend and I spent at least 20 minutes (looking like complete fools, I’m sure) trying to fit them into the back of my small SUV which was already full of other good finds. We finally made it work!
I got them home and presented them to my reluctant looking husband for repair. Luckily for me he is a good sport, he was able to use some screws and wood glue and fix them right up, sturdy as ever.
Now for the fun part! As I always say when tackling a DIY or rerecording project, try to use what you have. I had recently repainted the shutters on our house with Sherwin-Williams Ovation Latex Exterior paint in Tricorn Black. I decided to use the leftover paint on the chairs. After a good sanding and a few coats of paint, they came out beautiful! You could certainly use an exterior spray paint for a project like this.
For finishing touches I purchase outdoor chair cushions and decorative outdoor pillows. After everything was said and done these chairs cost less than $30 each. I’ve had many compliments on my chair and I couldn’t be happier with them!
